Ransomware, Spam Emails or SMS’s?
Have you ever received a text explaining that you’ve been subscribed to a Premium SMS Service?
Spam SMS / Premium SMS Services
Companies like Singtel – Optus, use a confirm once method to subscribe to premium SMS services. Premium SMS services usually are weekly or cost roughly $5.00 per SMS received. This method can be tricked by making a ad-popup to be scripted in such a way by it loading you’ve already clicked “Yes, I agree” for premium services. Quite often they wont even let you know that you have been signed up to anything for at least an hour/day.
Then before you know it! your receiving messages all the time and your phone bill skyrockets.
Thankfully we have an SMS we can send all Fraudulent / Spam SMS to
ACMA Spam Hotline SMS—0429 999 888
Next call your phone carrier and see if they are willing to reverse the charges. (They will credit you at their own discretion)
Your phone carrier is charged for these services so if they credit you, remember, they still wear the bill.
Ransomware, encrypts all your files and your PC is virtually unusable and generally have to pay some kind of crypto-currency to get the digital key and unlock your PC.
Unfortunately this happens all the time and businesses are usually targeted by area. If in the event you are to pay the sum requested, they do in fact provide steps and help unlock your PC.
However, ithas been noted they re-offend previously hit PCs. They attack network drives and send disguised as email attachments, to allow spread. A handy tool CryptoPrevent to slow this down, is free, and can be found here!
Many Ransomware attacks come from email attachments. So please be sure that you know whom sent the email and scan the attachment before opening!
